Empathy in Action: Tackling Racism as a Latina Mental Health Clinician

Updated: Oct 19, 2023

In today's world, it's evident that racism isn't just a social issue; it's a public health emergency, as declared by the governor of Michigan during the COVID-19 pandemic. As a Latina mental health clinician, I've embraced my role as an advocate, striving to serve a more diverse group of clients. I understand that for many individuals from minority backgrounds, there's a unique comfort in seeking help from someone who shares their lived experiences.

In Latino households, it's not uncommon for children to grow up quickly, often becoming caregivers for their siblings from a very young age. This responsibility can place immense pressure on them, impacting their mental health. As a clinician, I've witnessed the resilience of these young individuals, and I'm committed to providing them with the support they need to navigate life's challenges.

One aspect that I often encounter in my practice is the complex mother-daughter relationship dynamic. It's a terrain fraught with emotion, where generations collide. Many Latina mothers and daughters have never had the opportunity to address their own mental health needs. The legacy of unhealed wounds can strain these relationships, creating a cycle of emotional turmoil.

My goal is to break this cycle, to end generational trauma by empowering my clients with the tools they need to heal and navigate their emotions effectively. I believe that when we equip individuals with the knowledge and skills to address their mental health, we pave the way for healthier families and communities.

As an ally in the realm of mental health, I make a "good faith" effort to support the betterment of mental health matters affecting my clients. This means actively listening to their unique experiences and challenges, respecting their cultural backgrounds, and advocating for policies and practices that prioritize mental wellness for all.

In a world where systemic racism still persists, and mental health disparities persistently affect minority communities, empathy and advocacy are crucial. By addressing the mental health needs of my clients with care and compassion, I hope to contribute to a future where individuals from all backgrounds have equal access to the support and resources they need to thrive. Together, we can heal wounds, break generational cycles, and create a more inclusive and mentally healthy society.
